 In 1998, Hoyman/Browe Studio hosted a workshop featuring the English legend, big pot thrower, Svend Bayer. This week of hands-on potting with Svend joined a full studio of students of many levels to produce pieces larger than any had made previously.
Svend, with his vast knowledge and expertise in making large pots, was
patient and thorough in assisting participants in stretching their previous sense of scale and form.
The week was finished up with a slide lecture documenting Svend's history from his first travels to Asia investigating the indigenous potters and their kilns, through his various kilns at his studio at Duckpool Cottage in North Devon, England.
With the last carousel of slides, we were treated to a glimpse of the new direction in which his work was headed: a complete reliance on the fire and ashes of his anagama kiln to decorate the ware by using longer and longer firings.
